History

-gets invaded by the Dutch in 1878

-with both empires expanding towards one another

-fall of Koetaradja happens quickly, however Sultan's grandson flees into the interior and continues campaign

-following Dutch turning over alliance and French Wars > Fourth French War (1880-4), French need to obtain friendly ports

-Aceh's long attempts to gain foreign assistance finally pay off when in 1886, French Republic fleet comes from Mascarene Islands

-declares it has brought Aceh under its protection and threatens to bombard Koetaradja

-sudden threat of war with France

-Dutch stand down, accept independence of Aceh on basis of it not worth it


-Aceh now has to rebuild

-brings in massive number of Chinese workers despite revulsion at their religion

-opens massive gutta-percha fields, exporting them to France

-exports coal to Sultanate of Johor Darul Tazim, French Clangue

-opens up telegraph line connecting it to Pondicherry and rest of French network

-but sultan successfully able to play French off Dutch to retain autonomy

-by 1910, Aceh has truly become modern
